The Kariba Dam supplies hydro-electric power to Zambia, Zimbabwe and other countries in the region. The dam and its six flood gates were built between 1955 and 1959, with turbine rooms to generate electricity added later. The Zambezi River, upon which the Kariba power stations are situated, serves as a natural border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The management of the Kariba Dam and the ensuing energy production is a result of a bilateral agreement between these two nations. The Kariba Dam is also a tourist attraction, offering amazing views and educational tours. The building of the dam has also spawned a fishing industry. The Kariba North Bank Power Station is owned and run by the Zambia Electricity Supply Company (ZESCO).
